Plitvice Lakes Routes Explained: Which One Is Right for You
Plitvice Lakes National Park has seven official walking routes labelled A, B, C, E, F, H, and K (there is no D, G, I, or J). Routes A, B, and C start from Entrance 1 and focus on the Lower Lakes. Routes E, F, and H start from Entrance 2 and emphasise the Upper Lakes. Route K covers the full park and can start from either entrance. For most first-time visitors, Route C (from Entrance 1, 8 km, 4–5 hours) or Route H (from Entrance 2, 8.9 km, 4–5 hours) are the best choices — both cover the complete park including the Kozjak boat ride and panoramic train.
Plitvice Lakes National Park’s route system is genuinely well-designed — but the letter labelling is confusing and the information at the entrances does not always make the differences between routes clear. This guide breaks down every route in plain language, so you can choose before you arrive and make the most of your visit.

How the Route System Works
All seven routes are circular — they return you to the entrance where you started. The park uses colour-coded trail markers: green signs for routes starting from Entrance 1, orange signs for routes starting from Entrance 2. Routes that cover both sections of the park (C, H, K) use the electric boat across Lake Kozjak to bridge the Upper and Lower Lakes zones, and the panoramic train to return to the starting entrance. Both the boat and train are included in your admission ticket.
Note that you do not have to follow a route rigidly — the park is well signposted and experienced visitors often combine elements of different routes. The seven official programmes are best understood as suggested itineraries rather than fixed mandatory paths.
Route A — The Short Lower Lakes Loop
| Start | Entrance 1 (north) |
| Distance | 3.5–4 km |
| Duration | 2.5–3.5 hours |
| Difficulty | Easy |
| Boat/train | No |
| Covers | Lower Lakes only |
Route A is the shortest programme, designed for visitors with limited time or reduced mobility. From Entrance 1, you descend the switchback path into the Lower Lakes canyon, walk the famous boardwalks directly above the turquoise water, pass Veliki Slap waterfall (78 metres, Croatia’s tallest), and loop back to Entrance 1 through the forest.
What you miss: The Upper Lakes, the boat crossing of Lake Kozjak, and the panoramic train. Route A covers the park’s most iconic section but skips the complete experience.
Best for: Visitors with 2–3 hours, those with mobility limitations, late afternoon arrivals in summer (the discounted after-4:00 PM ticket pairs well with Route A), and anyone who wants to see Veliki Slap without committing to a full-day walk.
Route B — Lower Lakes with Boat and Train
| Start | Entrance 1 (north) |
| Distance | 4 km |
| Duration | 3–4 hours |
| Difficulty | Easy |
| Boat/train | Yes — both included |
| Covers | Lower Lakes + Kozjak boat + train return |
Route B follows the same initial path as Route A — the descent into the canyon, the boardwalks, and Veliki Slap — but instead of looping back on foot, it continues to the P3 boat terminal at the foot of Lake Kozjak. From there, the electric boat crosses the lake (approximately 10–15 minutes) and you board the panoramic train from the P1 terminal back to Entrance 1. Route B adds the boat and train experience without requiring the Upper Lakes walk.
Best for: First-time visitors with half a day who want the full boat-and-train experience but cannot manage 4–5 hours of walking. Families with younger children who want the scenic boat ride. Visitors on tight schedules.
Route C — Lower and Upper Lakes from Entrance 1 (Most Popular)
| Start | Entrance 1 (north) |
| Distance | 8 km |
| Duration | 4–5 hours |
| Difficulty | Easy–Moderate |
| Boat/train | Yes — both included |
| Covers | Both Upper and Lower Lakes |
Route C is the most popular walking programme at Plitvice Lakes. Starting from Entrance 1, it descends to the Lower Lakes and Veliki Slap waterfall, crosses Lake Kozjak by electric boat, explores the Upper Lakes (12 of the park’s 16 named lakes), and returns to Entrance 1 by panoramic train. Total distance is approximately 8 km; most visitors complete it in 4 to 5 hours at a comfortable pace. It covers the park’s full range of landscapes — from the dramatic Lower Lakes canyon to the calmer, reflective Upper Lakes forests.
From Entrance 1 you walk towards the waterfalls — one of the great advantages of Route C over Route H is that you are approaching the cascades head-on, which most visitors describe as more visually dramatic. After the Lower Lakes section and Veliki Slap, the boat takes you across Kozjak to the Upper Lakes. You walk through the Upper Lakes zone (quieter, more forested, with gentler waterfalls and mirror-still reflections), then return by train.
Best for: First-time visitors with a full morning or afternoon. Guided tours from Zagreb, Split, and Zadar typically follow Route C. Anyone who wants to see the complete park in a single coherent walk.
Route E — Short Upper Lakes Loop
| Start | Entrance 2 (south) |
| Distance | 5.5 km |
| Duration | 2.5–3 hours |
| Difficulty | Easy |
| Boat/train | Partial |
| Covers | Upper Lakes only |
Route E is the Upper Lakes equivalent of Route A — a shorter programme focusing on the 12 upper lakes without crossing to the Lower Lakes section. It includes Veliki Prštavac and Mali Prštavac, two of the park’s most photogenic Upper Lakes waterfalls.
Best for: Return visitors who want to focus on the Upper Lakes, visitors staying overnight near Entrance 2, or those combining Entrance 2 with a separate Entrance 1 visit.
Route F — Upper Lakes with Boat
| Start | Entrance 2 (south) |
| Distance | 4.6 km |
| Duration | 3–4 hours |
| Difficulty | Easy |
| Boat/train | Yes |
| Covers | Upper Lakes + Kozjak boat |
Route F follows the same path as Route B, but in reverse — starting from Entrance 2 through the Upper Lakes, crossing Kozjak by boat, and returning by train. For visitors based near Entrance 2 who want the boat experience without the full park walk, this is the equivalent of Route B from the opposite end.
Route H — Full Park from Entrance 2 (Recommended for Full-Day Visitors)
| Start | Entrance 2 (south) |
| Distance | 8.9 km |
| Duration | 4–6 hours |
| Difficulty | Easy–Moderate |
| Boat/train | Yes — both included |
| Covers | Both Upper and Lower Lakes |
Route H is the full-park programme starting from Entrance 2 at Plitvice Lakes. It begins at the Upper Lakes, walks top-down through all 16 lakes and major waterfalls, crosses Lake Kozjak by electric boat, enters the dramatic Lower Lakes canyon, and returns to Entrance 2 by panoramic train. At 8.9 km it is slightly longer than Route C, and the top-down walking direction — mostly downhill through the Upper Lakes — makes it physically easier despite the greater distance. It is generally recommended for full-day visitors who prefer a quieter start and want to arrive at the busiest Lower Lakes section in the afternoon when crowds are beginning to thin.
The top-down structure of Route H has a practical advantage: you begin at Entrance 2 (quieter at opening time), walk through the tranquil Upper Lakes in the morning before tour groups arrive, and reach the dramatic Lower Lakes canyon in the early afternoon as many morning visitors are leaving. This can give you a significantly more peaceful experience of both sections than Route C, which sends you into the most crowded Lower Lakes section first.
Best for: Full-day visitors who want the complete park experience in the most logistically comfortable order. Independent walkers who arrive early and want a quieter start. Photographers who want the Lower Lakes in afternoon light.
Route K — The Full Park Loop (For Dedicated Walkers)
| Start | Entrance 1 or Entrance 2 |
| Distance | 18–22 km |
| Duration | 6–8 hours |
| Difficulty | Moderate |
| Boat/train | Partial |
| Covers | Complete park perimeter |
Route K is the longest programme, covering the full perimeter of the lake system including forest sections above the canyon that no other route includes. It is for dedicated walkers who want the most complete experience and are comfortable with a full day on their feet.
Unlike Routes C and H, which cross Lake Kozjak by boat, Route K walks around the lake on a forest path — a quieter, more immersive section where the main tour crowds are absent. This makes it the best route for solitude at Plitvice Lakes, despite its length.
Best for: Experienced hikers, visitors who have done the standard routes and want to see the park’s quieter sections, and anyone who prioritises solitude over efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better — Route C or Route H?
Both cover the full park and include the boat and train. Route C (from Entrance 1) is more dramatic at the start; Route H (from Entrance 2) is quieter at the start and reaches the Lower Lakes when crowds are thinning. For first-time visitors on a day tour, Route C is the standard. For independent full-day visitors who want a more relaxed opening sequence, Route H is excellent.
Can I deviate from the official route?
Yes — the park is well marked and you can adapt your walk to your pace and interests. The official routes are best understood as suggested itineraries, not mandatory paths.
Are all routes open year-round?
No. In winter (approximately November to April), the Upper Lakes section may be partially or fully closed due to ice and snow. Route A, covering the Lower Lakes only, typically remains open year-round. Always check the official park website before a winter visit.
Do I need to choose my route before I book my ticket?
You need to choose your entrance before booking — the ticket is issued for a specific entrance. The route itself can be decided when you arrive at the park.
